Klaxon Gueule always end up where you don’t expect them. Following a
disturbing episode of near-silence (the Muets CD, previously released on the damn fine
Ambiances Magnétiques label) they went and recorded their third and latest CD inside a
barn situated in Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur (Québec). Microscope-minded music, again, but
very much audible, and very much comestible too. Eolian textures, organic developments without
pesticides, and here we are: the Côté, Falaise, St-Onge trio has found its way to the
center of living matter and are ready to make you hear its most intimate sonic secrets. Also
heard on this disc are the untested genetic contributions of Christof Migone and Sam Shalabi,
two eminent scientists of complicated improv. Grain may be the smallest measure of life; but
take our word on it: there’s a lot going on inside the shell! Ingredients: L-Isoleucine

Eight pieces like eight flashbacks to a bygone daily sonic life. A nostalgia-prone
stroll down obsolescence lane. Eight pieces like eight memories and stories, true or fictional,
happy or sad, in Technicolor or Smell-o-rama. + 1. Night, snores, tick-tock, peace, dreams,
drrrring! + 2. Desert, wind, sand, blues, pulleys, windmill, sun + 3. Play, unwind, rewind,
clack, fast-forward, tape, a reedy voice + 4. Mystery, tension, clock, action, drama,
ring… nobody! + 5. The fall of black and white in a “natural” context + 6.
The printer_. Nostalgia for the future. Soon, it will be only virtual + 7. Messages left on
cassettes, found in flea markets and bazaars, stories by “real” people. (Thanks to
Shirley and Ginette) + 8. The hum of percolators, the gargles of coffee going up and down,
music in smell-o-rama for a rainy morning. This disc was entirely assembled without the consent
of the musicians playing on it. I thank them for agreeing to record “blindfolded”
and let me manipulate them as I pleased. (Diane Labrosse)

Île bizarre is the fortunate encounter of three bruitists — Diane
Labrosse, Ikue Mori and Martin Tétreault — who collage raw noises and spatial
elements into elaborate sound clusters: a collection of beautiful interferences, pops and
frying sounds. Île bizarre is based on extreme usage of minimal sound material. The
resulting music is abstract and impressionistic — a kind of “cinema for the
ears” akin to electroacoustic research. It is a series of immaterial journeys chock full
of surrealist impressions, foreign ambiances, projections and memories. “Let’s say
that we are ubiquitous and timeless. Let’s say that we are sensitive to the play of light
and shadows, to the engulfment of perfume, to the charm of foreign languages. Let’s say
that we are solitary souls; that we are wanderers, sea seekers; that our ears are wide open and
that we have a lot of time on our hands.” —DL

This is the long-anticipated encounter between Martin Tétreault and Otomo
Yoshihide, recorded in the CBC studios in Montréal. Witness for yourself the clash of two
masterful turntable manipulators, one from Japan, the other from Quebec: two universes, two
attitudes and one electro-mechanical encounter around the record player. The result is a
stunning collection of twenty-one improvised “situations” exploring themes such as
science fiction, education, jungle, cartoons, and seventeen additional surprise topics, and
through which our protagonists explore harsh noise, grooveless needles, mutant
scratching… all in the name of vinyl. 21 revolutionary improvisations which deliver on
your expectations.

Following the electro-mechanical exploration of 21 situations, (AM 069), Martin
Tétreault and Otomo Yoshihide now focus on phonograms and the devices that transform them.
An initial, intensely dynamic “Studio” encounter, recorded live and with no
reprocessing, makes up CD 1. Then both artists went to work with their respective equipment to
reprocess raw material not used on CD 1. Tétreault used obsolete tape recorders to create
a flowing analogue remix: “Analogique” CD 2. Otomo used an ultramodern computer to
generate a vigorous, staccato digital reconstruction: “Numérique” CD 3. Each
produced his remix without consulting the other—these are two distinctive personal
journeys, each taken with the aid of widely different equipment that marked the way the sounds
were produced and reproduced throughout. The first listening was a surprise for
them—there are three surprises in store for you!

In the spring of 2003, Martin Tétreault and Otomo Yoshihide toured part of
Europe in a 15-date, 16-day marathon organized by Les Instants chavirés, in co-production
with SuperMusique. Out of these improv concerts, six were captured on various media: CDR, DAT
and MiniDisc. The thought of preserving these moments came naturally to the ears of our two
turntablists and was motivated by the renewed pleasure of playing together and, of course, by
the quality of the music, which, night after night, explored new forms, ranging from sonic
economy to something much harsher. This spontaneous reaction from the musicians would come from
the quality of both room and stage sound, the venue occupied — museum, auditorium, rock
bar — or the attention of the audience. Soon, the idea of releasing a live album was
explored. But there was too much material to fit on a single disc. And so it was decided to put
together a trilogy where each disc would focus on one aspect of the duo’s work on stage:
the noisiest material on 1. Grrr (November ’04), the most fragmented on 2. Tok (February
’05), and finally the smoothest on 3. Ahhh (May ’05). 1. Grrr noisy, distorted,
loud, larsen-laden, highly intense, no silence.

2. Tok picks up where 1. Grrr has left. This time around, the sound fabric is
fragmented, sliced, and - through Otomo and Martin’s actions - lets silences, dynamic
variations in volume and speed, and the rhythmical rumble of turntables left to their own
devices come through. This second installment is beat-driven. 3. Ahhh will round up this live
series in May 2005.

3. Ahhh already takes us to the end of our frenetic trilogy, which also comprises
the noisy 1. Grrr and the fragmented 2. Tok. Staying true to the series’ sound sorting
logic, 3. Ahhh features Otomo and Tétreault in a calmer, more soothing mood (no kidding!).
At their own slower pace, these improvisations unfold following a linear progression. Volumes
and velocities are scaled down intensity-wise, rubbings are singing and silences highlight some
delicate gestures played on and with an instrumentarium already tested on 1. Grrr and 2. Tok.
The listening is different but the sound quality is preserved. Grab it now to complete the
trilogy.

Otomo Yoshihide are celebrating the release of 4. Hmmm. This fourth disc completes the
long-awaited box set! This album, like the previous three, contains excerpts from concerts
recorded on a fast-paced European tour, in a 15-date, 16-day marathon organized by Les Instants
chavirés, in co-production with SuperMusique. 4. Hmmm culls the pieces left over from the
first three records. Aiming at something very nuanced, this album presents a little bit from
all three facets: something noisy, something percussive, something calm. Noise still reigns
over the music, with its distortions, feedbacking, dissident pulses and strident crackling.
Hesitations over the album’s title yielded 4. Hmmm. This album is released in a limited
edition.

Taxonomy (Martusciello, Lella, Fega) plays compositions and improvises, exploring
the syncretism between different musical codes. Taxonomy always allows the whole to be divided
up into its constituent parts. A line of shadow between osmosis and isomorphism. Martusciello
is a member of the improvisation group Ossatura. In the same spirit as Parasites (AM 096), this
group chooses an electro-noise approach. The finesse of the mix, worthy of electroacoustic
music, highlights the rich details, a dynamic palette ranging from clashing noise to silent
tracks. The album, A Global Taxonomical Machine, offers a gripping blend of concrete noise,
abstract electronic effects and acoustic sections. Martusciello work in the improv group
Ossatura, a major act on the international avant-garde music circuit. Places which do not
appear on any map. Morphological analogies that lie between thought and micro-organisms.
Strange correlations between the letters of forgotten alphabets and globalised (de-localised)
languages. For us in the past all books, alphabets, signs, chemistry (both organic and
inorganic), geography, religion, politics and journeys were only scenery of an experience, a
dream or aspiration. Then we met by the same bookshelf of that same library. We are not
particularly cultured and so we confined ourselves to the task of taxonomy, the most arbitrary
of taxonomies. We thought about compiling signs according to our desires. The resulting volume
does not tell any story, or even reveal any truth or discovery. This is an illegible text,
devoid of significance but with meaning. If, in some way, the world itself can be reflected in
the myriad of small fragments that compose it, then this is the fragment that we have
unearthed. Very active in a number of groups and ensembles, and extremely versatile, the
members of this trio live for improvised and experimental music. Elio Martusciello is a
renowned electroacoustician, with several international awards under his belt. Besides
electronics, Roberto Fega also plays tenor and soprano sax. He is a member of the political
fanfare Titubanda and the multimedia collective Arturo, and also composes music for dance.
Graziano Lella is best known as a bassist and a sax player. He has previously played in a punk
band before joining the avant-rock group Dura Figura in 1997.
