Winners of the Destellos Foundation Competition Are…

Foundation Destellos — created in 2007 through the initiative of Elsa Justel — has announced the winners of the 1st Competition of Electroacoustic Composition for Argentine composers. The Destellos Prize was awarded to the work Viscuap by Basilio del Boca. Lo inefable by Maria Cristina Kasem and Psiclos by Nicolás Ordiales received the Motus prize (ex æquo). The jury for Destellos Prize was made of Christian Clozier (France), Jens Hedman (Sweden), Alejandro Viñao (Argentina), Ingrid Drese (Belgium), and Benjamin Thigpen (USA). The jury for the Motus Prize was composed of Denis Dufour and Thomas Brando (France).

See Sonde Sound Structures, Montréal

Sound has Legs, presented on May 1-June 1, 2008 at SAT in Montréal, is an exhibition that presents sound structures and visual documents pertaining to Sonde, the interdisciplinary group that was active for the most part from 1976 to ’86. In resonance with these archival materials, Nathan McNinch, a young composer from Kingston (Ontario), will unveil his first sound installation (curator Éric Mattson).

New Sound Installation by Heimbecker

The new sound installation Turbulence Sound Matrix by Steve Heimbecker will be presented every evening of the Elektra 9 festival, prior to the concerts at Usine C, from May 7 to 10, 2008. Steve Heimbecker will also present his 64-channel audio piece Signe composed for the installation.

A Mixed Music Cocnert in Montréal

On May 10, 2008 Productions Totem Contemporain will present a concert of electroacoustic and instrumental works at Espace Totem (6545, Durocher #400) in Montréal. On the programme are works for recorder, amplified doublebass, bowl, turntables, and live processing and a performance for musician and dancer. With Swedish Jesper Nordin, Anna Petrini, and Montrealer Frédéric Tavernini, and Jean-François Laporte.

The latest album by Barry Truax released on the Cambridge Street Records label, Spirit Journies, proposes a symbolic and dreamlike journey that envelops the listener with rich and diverse sounds. They may come from the recordings of Canadian steam train whistles designed by Robert Swanson, as much as voices recorded in San Bartolomeo cathedral in Busetto (Italy), Inuit throat singing, or Japonese shakuhachi.

Tatjana Mehner, Brunhild Meyer-Ferrari, Radosveta Bruzaud, Andrea Cohen, Monika Lichtenfeld, and Jacqueline Caux have contributed to this new version of the book.

Canadians on DEGEM WebRadio

The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) has hosted a number of Canadian electroacoustic composers over the years such as: Robin Minard, Gordon Monahan, Christian Calon, Francis Dhomont, and Robert Normandeau. The DEGEM and ZKM propose a WebRadio programme which features works composed by these past guest artists as well as by the newest Canadian guest, Gilles Gobeil, in Berlin since January 2008. The Programme B is under section “Berichte/Features.”

Robin Minard: Gallery Show, Concert in Montréal

Robin Minard, ex-member of Sonde, is back in Montréal after 20 years of absence! He will present Sons sur papier, a retrospective of several sound installations, at Oboro from April 12 to May 10, 2008. He will also diffuse 3 acousmatic works as part of the Pulsar *3 series on April 14, 2008 at the Planétarium de Montréal. The opening feature of this concert is Nicolas Bernier’s premiere of Les chambres de l’atelier. Note that at this occasion co-artistic directors of Réseaux, Jean-François Denis, Gilles Gobeil, and Robert Normandeau, are “passing the torch” to Nicolas Bernier, versatile and prolific young composer…

Mathew Adkins will present his work Melt on May 7, 2008 during the ElectroFest, an event that takes place as part of the University of East London Mayfest 08 (England, UK). Moreover, from May 5 to 21 Mathew Adkins is composer in residence at IMEB in Bourges, completing a new composition which will be premiered during Synthèse 2008 - 38th Bourges International Electronic Music and Compositions Festival on May 31. He will also be part of the Bourges’ International Competitions of Electroacoustic Music and Sound Art jury.

Pierre Alexandre Tremblay will be performing with his Paris-based contemporary jazz trio ars circa musicæ on May 8, 2008 at the Studio de l’ermitage, Paris XX; May 22 at Le Périscope, Lyon; May 24 at L’Atelier du Plateau, Paris XIX; and June 30 at The Oxford, London. He will also perform his piece for bass guitar and laptop, Sandbox#2, in Paris on May 23 as part of the festival Sophie aime le plateau, and in Brighton on July 6 as part of Sonic Arts Network’ Expo Brighton.

“Sound Art” Workshop with Barrett, Burton… in Orford

This year, the composers registered will be able to collaborate with performers of the Contemporary Music Interpretation Workshop.
