“Sounds tumble about…”

Why Empreintes Digitales sometimes releases CDs and sometimes DVDs I am not sure of. The DVDs are not related to films, but contain 24-bit audio (as opposed to 16-bit on a normal CD) and surround versions. Maybe there are no surround sound versions available of the works they put on CD?

Here are two DVDs releases, and Nicolas Bernier seems a bit of an odd ball in the more academic serious world of Empreintes Digitales. His background is more in the microsound, ambient, glitch music and has had releases on Cronica, Ahornfelder, Leerraum and Home Normal. He uses the sounds of typewriters, field recordings, tuning forks, old machines and sometimes even real instruments. Yet on Travaux mécaniques his music sounds remarkable alike his peers on this label, save perhaps for the opening Antithèse électronique, which is an odd one minute laptop punk song. In the four other pieces sounds stumble about, with incidents happening all over the place. Writing Machine is an ode to William S Burroughs, cutting up a spoken word performance, along with the heavily processed sounds thereof and the sounds of a typewriter. Quite vibrant music, swiftly moving about with a great sense of drama. Not fully absorbed by the world of serious academic electronic music, this is quite an enjoyable work by someone who hasn’t fully understood — quite rightly as it turns out — the exact rules of composing, but follows his own path and makes his own great music.

Adrian Moore has a more serious background, with various studies and degrees in the UK and France and is a teacher. He operates more within the strict rules of composing this kind of acousmatic music, and even crosses the line towards classical music with his Fields of Darkness and Light for violin and electronics. […] In the other pieces he may use instruments too, but they are less recognizable (such as in 3Pieces [with] piano, horn and violin). Sounds tumble about, with glissandi working on and off and the whole thing has quite learned character. […]

“It shows just how effective this music can be when a composer of Bernier’s obvious talent treats sound as an all-encompassing ecosystem.”

Discussions of “The soul of the machine” have been going on since at least the time of the Luddites, and probably since the debut of the wheel. This is one of the reasons that I enjoy the new Nicolas Bernier album Travaux mécaniques so much. On this new DVD-Audio, Bernier explores the subject primarily through the use of electronic music, which makes for a nice bit of irony.

The five tracks that make up Travaux mécaniques are concerned with the sounds of industry in many different forms. One description of the album would be to call it musique concrete. That term certainly applies, but there is much more to this recording than that somewhat simplified musical categorization would imply. There is no doubt in my mind that each of the five pieces were deeply thought out, yet the overall effect sounds random. This speaks to the compositional talents of Nicolas Bernier, for it must be a very difficult thing to make music that sounds as if the machines are playing themselves.

For this listener, one of the most compelling tracks is Les chambres de l’atelier (10:48). As Bernier describes it in his liner notes, the piece is “The workshop. A place of sudden agitation, of ideas both clear and unclear that disappear just as quickly as they surge.” During this track, both electric and non-electric sounds converge to create a mysterious and oddly intriguing ambience.

Even more fascinating to me is Writing Machine (15:28). The piece is inspired by the famous “cut-up” writing technique of William S Burroughs, and “By some similarities between his writing, and electroacoustic composition,” as Bernier again states in his notes. The use of disconnected spoken word elements, along with a great deal of various tonal directions certainly adds up to a very interesting listening experience. It shows just how effective this music can be when a composer of Bernier’s obvious talent treats sound as an all-encompassing ecosystem.

Nicolas Bernier’s Travaux mécaniques has been released on the Canadian empreintes DIGITALes label, who specialize in some of the most adventurous electronic music currently available. Check out their website for more information about Travaux mécaniques, and other electroacoustic artists on the label.

Two releases from two composers I never heard of on the Empreintes Digitales label, home of the world of acousmatic composers.

Her [Elainie Lillios’s] biography reads like a list of official institutions and festivals, which is no doubt to impress the reader, but none of these mean much to me. The music however on this CD is quite interesting. Unlike others on this label not all here is about putting sounds through computer processing, which in this circle of composers often leads to similar results, but the power here lies in the use of field recordings (cars, voices, water) to come to the listener untreated but put together in a radiophonic manner. Sometimes the use of electronics is a bit too much of a cliche, me thinks, but the poetic Arturo and the filmic car sounds of three piece suite of Backroads are quite nice.

From the UK is Pete Stollery, BMus(Hons), MA, PGCE and PhD, a professor of electroacoustic music and composition. His music seems to be build from field recordings which sometimes shimmer through all the electronic processing that is going on. Like with the release by Lillios, things for me are most interesting when it moves away from all the well-known practice of acousmatic sound processing and focussing on primarily field recordings, such as in Field of Silence. In Resound he uses interviews with people and here its is where the music becomes great. It has a fine radiophonic character, with mumbling voices, street sounds and what seems an absence of electronic processing. It’s only with the third piece, Still Voices, that we hear more and more of these field recordings, as the first two sink away in sound processing. A combination of electronics and pure field recordings done well is the closing piece, scènes, rendez-vous, which has a fine soundtrack like capacity.

I wasn't too happy a few years with the direction this label heading, but these two pick up matters where I like to see them best: a fine combination of pure sound and treatments.

[Translation] Nicolas Bernier seems fascinated with machines - the old mechanical kind that needs some elbow grease to get going. Travaux mécaniques (out on DVD-A with surround and stereo mixes) culls four electroacoustic works about these machines. In Writing Machine, treated typewriter sounds accompany cut-ups of William S Burroughs’ voice. Les chambres de l’atelier and Liaisons mécaniques evoke gears, cogs, assemblages, sequences of actions entailing other actions, fantastic cause-and-effect relationships. Dans le ventre de la machine takes us into the belly of the beast, an immersive journey through a soundscape of gears, with Mario Savio’s famous Bodies upon the gears speech thrown in for good measure. Travaux mécaniques paints a highly complex soundworld where there’s a lot happening on many levels.
[Translation] This CD culls works realized between 2005 and 2011, a very fine harvest. I am particularly fond of Jeu de langues made mostly out of inspirations edited from recordings of wind instrument players (the piece is sensual in a troubling way) and Anadliad, consisting of bagpipes, pibgorn, and the winds of Wales. And let’s not forget Palimpseste, the last (finally!) installment in the Onomatopées cycle started in (gasp!) 1991. Some very good electroacoustic music, thoughtful, masterful, and moving (which is not always the case in Normandeau’s œuvre).

[Translation] I usually like, not love, Yves Daoust’s works. However, this DVD-A release, Voix, is worth slipping into an empreintes DIGITALes top 10 list. Throughout this record, Daoust is looking back — at himself, at electroacoustic music, at music in general. Voix breaks no new ground, it’s not a revolutionary record, but it showcases the mastery and talent of Daoust as a composer. Four pieces: a self-portrait where Daoust comes back to the Revox tape recorder of his youth; a piece made with daily concrete sounds (in an early musique concrète style); a tribute to an old friend who has passed away; and a rereading of Bach’s chorals. The latter piece, Chorals ornés (42 minutes) is a tour de force: Daoust has put electroacoustic and poetic garments over 14 chorals by Bach, performed at the church organ by Régis Rousseau. These ornaments highlight the emotions already contained in Bach’s music, or create constrats or bring in a personal interpretation. A great work of art.

In Objet menacé, the parking meter at the core of the work is quickly forgotten in favour of the intrinsic qualities of the sounds it makes. The magnum opus here is the three-part Impasto, 45 minutes of criss-crossing aural fluxes in homage to expressionistic/abstract painters.
[Translation] I have known electroacoustician Pete Stollery for a long time — almost since I started hosting Délire actuel. Fifteen years ago, he was one of the very first composers to send me material for my show. The works that ended up on his first empreintes DIGITALes releases, I had first heard and broadcasted them from DAT tapes he had mailed me. What a pleasure, then, to listen to this new album (a CD, not a DVD-A). Six works made between 2004 and 2007. Stollery has become a master in the art of lively acousmatic music. He has gained the aesthetic perfection of a Jonty Harrison, the elegance of a Francis Dhomont, and the soul… of Pete Stollery. The short Serendipities and Sychronicities represents the best of what can be found in this genre, including in terms of narrative/inspiration (it derives from Delia Derbyshire’s life and work). And Scènes, rendez-vous is a rereading/reimagining of Claude Lelouch’s famous short film C’était un rendez-vous. Strongly recommended.

Over in the United Kingdom, the band Splice consists of two British players — trumpeter Alex Bonney and drummer Dave Smith — plus French reedist Robin Fincker who has lived in London for a dozen years, and Montréal-born Pierre Alexandre Tremblay. Tremblay, who plays bass guitar and electronics, has taught at England’s University of Huddersfield since 2005 and oversees its electronic music studio. Perhaps that’s why this disc is entitled Lab (Loop Records 1013). It certainly has a more extensive electronic palate than the others. Although slippery and shuddering bass guitar runs are heard infrequently throughout, Tremblay’s electronics maintain the sometimes opaque methodical pulsations which pervade the disc. A track such as The Wanderer is smooth and bouncy, built on Fincker’s chromatic clarinet runs, Bonney’s trumpet obbligatos, a shuffle drum beat and electroacoustic colouring that could be Arabic music played on an accordion. The blurry wave forms which elsewhere quiver alongside, process or complement instrumental textures such as alphorn-like vibration from Fincker’s tenor saxophone, Bonney’s brassy or muted asides and drum pops and backbeat, are more upfront on Luna Verde. Stacked horn lines, sliding bass guitar licks and percussion rebounds are accompanied by processed textures that come in-and-out of aural focus. This crackling interface concretely outlines the theme statement from the harmonized horns.

Splice are a four-piece of improvising players featuring the London trumpeter Alex Bonney, the French-born sax player Robin Fincker, the electro-acoustic composer Pierre Alexandre Tremblay from Canada, plus the drummer Dave Smith. The common ground they share is Huddersfield University, where this was recorded, and the Loop Collective of which they are a part. On Lab (Loop Records Loop 1013), they concoct some fascinating episodes of rich and full music that tends to refuse easy categorisation; despite the mix of traditional instruments with live electronics, I’m pleased to see they can’t be labelled as “EAI” very easily. The opener Caffeinated Drinks is slow, droney, almost trance-like in the way it pulls you towards the calm centre of its strange resonating mixed chord, but then its follow-up Cortege allows the bass guitar (Tremblay) and drummer to cook up a slow rhythm that’s not too far apart from stoner rock, something that sounds distinctly odd when mixed with the melancholic romantic toplines of the brass section. Some of the following pieces are just about identifiable as “jazz”, albeit a very skeletal and elliptical and highly stylised form of post-everything bebop, and on other occasions the very full sound of the wind instruments makes for a slightly cloying effect; but these are captious remarks. There is some very original noise-making going down here, and the combo work exceptionally well together, almost like a looser version of, say, Chris Burn’s Ensemble from the 1990s. Good work, one to investigate.

“… there’s enough on the album that bodes very well for Splice in the future…”

As much as I would like to make some pretentious pronouncements — like how jazz that includes electro-acoustic elements only highlights the deficiencies of both areas, or how the last thing in the world we need to have right now is another horrible electro/jazz band — I can’t in good conscious do so (or at least without looking like a total prick). It certainly wouldn’t be fair to the fine musicians of Splice, whose own experiments in the fusion of electro acoustic and jazz on their album Lab are too interesting to shrug off into the bin of failed experiments. Maybe it would be more accurate and safe to say that it’s just goddamn hard to do this fusion thing right.

Thankfully, one of the things Splice does do right on Lab is that they don’t try to shoehorn the electronic textures into their pieces. This can be heard to best effect on Caffeinated Drinks, where puffs of an electronically-treated trumpet from Alex Bonney float over David Smith‘s skittering drums, and Robin Finker’s saxophone tremors to eventually coalesce over electronic hum from Pierre Alexandre Tremblay on bass guitar and electronics. There’s an attention to how these pieces fit and the allowance for sounds to breathe. On Débris, low tones, treated drum sounds, and sax/trumpet drones rise and sink like feathers in a light breeze as Smith‘s drums emerge subtly, sparingly keeping time in a mass of swirling electric eddies. Beautiful.

Of course, it can’t all be slow motion electronic drift. On Cortège, Finker, sounding like a less antiseptic Evan Parker, pulls out atonal serpentine lines on his tenor before switching gears to a haunting melody that floats over bass-heavy, nourish dirge. Or the rock and sci-fi funk of Matter, that rings of some of Ken Vandermark’s compositional forays, while still keeping a distinct textural palette and attention to space that’s all their own. However, if anything Lab reminds me of another Chicago group, Grey Ghost, who also melded flowing themes with often electronic back bones.

Of course, it doesn’t always hold together, as on Sillon fermé, where Tremblay’s electronically-filtered bass seems aimless as the rest of the band tries periodically to burst into flame, but achieving nothing more than a sputter. Not to mention Interlude which is just that — an interlude; or the The Mess, that, despite fine playing from Smith, doesn’t seem to go anywhere at all. Thankfully, these missteps are again countered with good compositions — The Wanderer rides an Arabic tinge into the darkness — a nighttime slither across an endless sea of sand. And Luna Verde hangs on a beautiful drifting melody that emerges from white noise buzz until slowly turning up the heat for a satisfying boil, thanks in large part to the powerful drumming of Smith and the bass riffing of Tremblay.

While the inclusion of electro acoustic textures in jazz is not new, from Otomo Yoshihide’s experiments with electro acoustic big band jazz to Sei Miguel’s more aery electro-jazz fusions, it’s doesn’t appear that Lab partakes in some obvious EAI jazz lineage. And if Lab doesn’t entirely succeed for me, there’s enough on the album that bodes very well for Splice in the future, and makes any grand pronouncements of what should and should not be done look, if not prickish, then wrong-headed.
