The piece takes the form of a long crescendo based on many parameters: progressive widening of the space; increase of intensity; and expansion of depth (near and far). While conserving a morphology that is grainy, imperfect and noisy, these elements also evolve in a crescendo. From machine-like sounds that are treated by computer will be emerging landscape of exterior sound sources. [i-07] Kuppel (2005-06) 17m36s nil.20074 | 20074 |Commission: ZKM Premiere: December 9, 2006, trans_canada_release, ZKM_Kubus (Karlsruhe, Germany) Composer: Robert Normandeau Kuppel is made of three recordings made in Karlsruhe (Germany) during a two months stay in the Fall 2005. Some of these recordings were made outside — the tramways of the city which have a very specific sonority, very calm in fact and the church chime of the Markplatz — and inside — the sound of a squeaking door adjacent to the studio where I was working at the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie). The work has been composed specially for the dome of speakers installed in the Kubus of the ZKM. I had this architecture while I started to work with the sound material. This work is a glimpse to the inhabitants of Karlsruhe as well as to the people who welcome me during my stay. But I didn’t want to tell them the whole truth at the beginning of the work. So the sonorities and the timbres unveil progressively to really make sense only at the end of the work. Kuppel is part of a deep listening» cycle which includes StrinGDberg, Éden, and Palindrome. [xii-06] Kuppel was composed in 2005 in the ZKM studios as well as in 2006 in the personal studio of the composer. The work has been commissioned by the ZKM where it was premiered on December 9th, 2006. Thanks to Ludger Brümmer. electrocd.com Other works (K) |
