        • Premiere: January 31, 2008, Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) — Queen’s University (Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK)

Like much of my recent work the initial stimulus for this work comes from painting. Panel 5 (for Finn) is based on the large and immersive late abstract paintings of Mark Rothko. As such, the work is more minimal in its surface gestural content than many of my previous works, focussing rather on the minutiae of subtle shifts in timbre and space. The work is constructed from a series of superimposed sonic layers — just as the paintings present Rothko’s characteristic superimposed rectangular blocks of colour.

Panel 5 (for Finn), under its first title rima, premiered on January 31, 2008 at the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) — Queen’s University (Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK).
