      Dreel (1996), 11m00s

The title, Dreel, has a number of associations which are all reflected in the sound materials chosen for the piece. First, it is the name of a river close to my home; the river gives its name to a bar, The Dreel Tavern, which was called The Railway Tavern until the railway closed thirty years ago. And finally, it is a contraction of the words ‘Dunmall’s Reel’. ‘Reel’ is a genre of Scottish dance music which might more usually be associated with the Scottish border bagpipes which are heard in various guises throughout the piece. The pipes were played for me by Paul Dunmall, better known as an improvising saxophonist.

In this work I wanted to contrast very different, but recognisable images in sound, without attempting to resolve the images. Juxtaposition and layering as well as computer processing are used to create ambiguity and blurring, and the piece leaves questions unanswered.

Dreel was commissioned by BEAST for the rumours concert series in Birmingham, with funds from West Midlands Arts.

      Onset / Offset (1996), 7m21s
      • Premiere: June 25, 1996, Filmhouse (Edinburgh, Scotland, UK)

“Onset — beginning; attack; articulation; impulse; an event marking a notable change of state.

Offset — displacement; perceptible delay in time; measurable distance in space; dislocation.

Onset/Offset explores the interplay between the real-world connotations of recognisable sounds and their spectromorphological characteristics (their purely sonic qualities). The resulting ambiguities lead to some startling displacements and dislocations between events/articulations and their continuations/extensions.” — Jonty Harrison

Onset/Offset was realized in summer 1996 in the Electroacoustic Music Studios of the University of Birmingham (UK) and the studios of Northern College (Aberdeen, Scotland) and premiered on June 25, 1996 at the Filmhouse (Edinburgh). It received Honourable Mentions at the Stockholm Electronic Arts Award (Sweden, 1996) and the 1st Concorso Internazionale di Composizione Musicale Elettronica Pierre Schaeffer (Pescara, Italy, 1998). This version was mastered by Dominique Bassal in 2005 in Montréal.

      Scherzo (1992, 93), 8m34s

Recordings of my three daughters’ voices together with some of their more musical toys provide the main source material for this celebration of — or lament for — childhood.

In their untransformed states these two pools of material form the poles of the work between which the music voyages over a variety of routes. Occasionally the journey is straightforward, children transforming directly into toys or vice versa, but more often the music follows a more meandering path, passing through transitory, equatorial realms in which the original sources are less discernible.

At such times, and for the greater part of the piece, it is the pure musicality of the material which is being explored, rather than its poetic or anecdotal possibilities, although suggestions of the fleeting transience of youth, the fragility of childhood innocence and the bitter-sweet remembrance of times past are never very far below the surface.

Scherzo was composed in the Spring of 1992 in the Electroacoustic Music Studios of the University of Birmingham, and revised during the summer of 1993. It was awarded a commendation in the 1993 Prix Ars Electronica, and an Honourable Mention in the 1994 Stockholm Electronic Music Awards.

      Altered Images (1995), 11m52s
      • Premiere: January 23, 1996, Université Concordia (Montréal, Québec)

“From the title, I’m prompted to think of both Claude Debussy and Ken Russell: Debussy’s various sets of Images for piano (and yet another for orchestra), Ken Russell’s film Altered States.

Rather than Reflets dans l’eau (Reflections in water), the composer reflects, among others, on spinning bicycle spokes (Mouvement?) — a banal sound of childhood play and ecological transport refracted, reflected and re-imagined: re-imaged.

The composer as conjurer — Russell’s modern man in a darkened room seeking a sacred, primal experience. Here, it is music… and the composer is in the role of shaman-magician.

      Am I hallucinating? Am I hearing? Am I dreaming? I am listening… ” — Joseph Anderson

Altered Images was realized in summer 1995 in the Electroacoustic Music Studios of the University of Birmingham (UK) and the studios of Northern College (Aberdeen, Scotland) and premiered on January 23, 1996 at Concordia University (Montréal). It was awarded the 2nd prize at the 2nd Concurso Internacional de Música Eletroacústica de São Paulo (CIMESP ’97, Brazil). This version was mastered by Dominique Bassal in 2005 in Montréal.
