1. Suk-Jun Kim: Kotmun (A Gate of Flowers) (2005) 8m56s mr_2006-1.1 | 20180 |

Composer: Suk-Jun Kim

In Korea, ornaments on doors with drawings or wood sculpture of flowers are not just an act of decoration; it is also one common way to bring good spirits to the house and to the people who live there. Many people pass or peek through these doors — an act of desire to get to another space. Sometimes however, one just gazes at the doors, their beautiful flowers and colors. One forgets why she or he was looking at them in the first place or what they wanted to seek beyond them. They stay on the border in-between, enchanted by their exquisite beauty. With Kotmun, the composer intends to auralize this moment of awareness. With the help of the poetic elements of the recorded sounds and the thematic structures of the compositions, the composer aims at creating the uneasiness and yet, spell-bounding experience of this border. Kotmun was commissioned by IMEB (Institut international de musique électroacoustique de Bourges), France.

2. Adam Stansbie: Early Morning (2006) 10m40s mr_2006-1.2 | 20181 |

Composer: Adam Stansbie

To Rosie Rodway

Early Morning is derived from five piano performances recorded in a variety of spaces over a period of several years. These performances incorporated both traditional and extended instrumental techniques, generating a wide variety of gestural and textural materials. Although these materials informed the overall unity of the piece, sound transformations proved to negate the piano as a recognisable source. Instead, the focus is upon the gradual accumulation and dispersal of spectral detail; these broad contours enhance the spatial impression, suggesting the expansive shaping of physical landscapes. The structure of the piece was inspired by the peaceful awakening of an early morning scene and its illumination in first light.

3. João Pedro Oliveira: Et ignis involvens (2005) 10m07s mr_2006-1.3 | 20182 |

This piece is inspired on the first vision of the prophet Ezechiel (Ezechiel 1:4): “et vidi et ecce ventus turbinis veniebat ab aquilone et nubes magna et ignis involvens et splendor in circuitu eius et de medio eius quasi species electri id est de medio ignis” (“And I looked, and behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself; and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire”). This piece was commissioned by Gulbenkian Foundation, and was composed in the composer’s personal studio and at the University of Keele Electronic Music Studio.

4. Raúl Minsburg: A tu memoria (para Naúm Minsburg) (2005) 8m03s mr_2006-1.4 | 20183 |

Composer: Raúl Minsburg

This work is dedicated to the composer’s father who passed away in 2003. The composer relied on sounds from different musical styles, which were those his father loved, and also ambience sounds which gave him pleasure, such as some animals or his grandsons voices, among others. Taking these materials as a point of departure the composer tried to get their common features, or even to process them in similar ways, in order to organize a unified discourse which intends to express in some way, something of what the permanent memory of his father generates in him.

5. Yu-Chung Tseng: The Inner Voice of Triangle (2006) 10m38s mr_2006-1.5 | 20184 |

Composer: Yu-Chung Tseng

The work is based on the concept of exploring some sounds seldom heard by people, especially the sounds inside the body. Such inner sounds could only be dug out through the modern digital means. The only acoustic material is a 3-hits triangle sounds. The sounds were modified and transformed, or “white-washed” to explore, to dig out possible timbres, sonic gestures or new voices. The processed sounds were then reorganized to create a sonic artwork — a piece of music. As an instrument member of percussion, triangle plays a very little role in the past repertoire of music and has been long ignored by most of composers. Through the use of computer and modern studio facility, composer is able to discover and to enlarge the inner voice of the little “instrument” — the Triangle. And finally, its virtual music (composition) potential of inner power and beauty can be revealed. The work was mixed at the Computer Music Studio at National Taipei University of Education in Taiwan in April 2006.

6. Daniel Barreiro: Maresia (2005-06) 11m55s mr_2006-1.6 | 20185 |

Composer: Daniel Barreiro

Maresia (scent of the sea or sea mist, in Portuguese) is a composition inspired by the sea in two different ways. Firstly, by the pleasant experience of being immersed and surrounded by water. Secondly, by the movement of the waves and the energy they release when they break — which cause the continuum of water to assume ephemeral, yet remarkable, shapes.

7. Junya Oikawa: Eclipse (2006) 7m56s mr_2006-1.7 | 20186 |

Composer: Junya Oikawa

This work was developed with limited materials from one sounding body. The composer conceived a factional vision with the work; in the amnio made of silence, sleeping cells of music develop their ego, attempting to convey something. And at some point, these music-cells become one organic body and scream. Then the cells’ consciousness goes blur, falling into dead sleep again.

8. Aki Ito: [./me_slowness] (2005) 9m51s mr_2006-1.8 | 20187 |

Composer: Aki Ito

Slowness is a major characteristic of the Japanese culture. This work contains interactive symbols: distance and the assimilation between image and culture, a falling moment in a suspended time.
