Motion engines have a basic yet amazing capacity to settle the listener-traveller ‘within,’ as if he were within a giant double bass which is stroken by a double bow: rails and air, as far as trains are concerned. In 1991, I explored this phenomenon during my everyday commutation from the studio to my home. I used only one 21-minute recording and considered it as one whole sound object. I’ve treated it and enriched it as would have done a photographer, immerging it in successive baths, and i’ve entitled it Grand bruit.
