      Meta incognita (1991), 10m01s
      • Premiere: November 29, 1991 (Arras, Pas-de-Calais, France)

On the Meta incognita where I landed one day, several laughs, iridescent in the silence, blend with the wind and the accents of the shamanic drum…

      [i-95]

Realized in 1991 with the support of the grant Villa Medicis hors les murs. Premiered on November 29, 1991 in Arras (France) during the Prix international Noroit-Léonce Petitot, Méta incognita was relased on the compact disc Prix international Noroit-Léonce Petitot 1991 (NOR 2) in 1992.

      Nipinggit — la parole (1994), 15m37s

In Nipinggit — la parole (Nipingit — The Speech), speech reveals itself through interviews which I undertook with the Inuit on Baffin Island; an incongruous character, the alto, had come to question…

With Leah Nutaraq, Qulualik Kilabuk, Archie Angnakak, Mary Ann Issarkiark, voice; Julie & Alice Cousin, strings.

      La guerre (1995), 21m05s

La guerre (War) which follows is a dream-like war between appearance and that within, of which the weapon is vocal sound, that of the breath, of laughter and of words. The chants which I arranged, perforemed by Élise Caron and Valérie Joly, evolve towards a trance; they attempt to lose themselves in the sounds of the aurora borealis. The general atmosphere of this study is dominated by the variations of Arctic light.

With Élise Caron, Valérie Joly, voice; Patrick Rouch, Yves Stocker, Paul Tanguy, horn. And with the participation of: Luc Candardjis, tympani; Louis Chretiennot, electric guitar; Jean-Jacques Cornillon, shanaï; Pascal Dusapin, Hammond organ; Philippe Foch, percussion; Gilles Grand, saxophone; Schyamal Maïtra, tabla; Anna & Margaux, Olivier Cadiot, Eeleesapee Ishulutak, Mary Ann Issarkiark, Maaki Kakkik, Malaia Papatsi, Martha Sivuarapik, Laina Tullaugak, Eeeleesapee Tulugak & Tapisaq, voice. And with the farewells of the ornithological team of Tony Gaston on deserted Coat Island (Hudson Bay).

      Plan séquence (1995), 5m58s

Plan séquence (Action Shot) retraces the path of a sound recordist around the small village of Kimirut. The walker, being startled some crows, had forgotten that even here, the bells sound on Sunday…

      [i-95]

All of the pieces where composed at studio Canope (Lyon, France), with the support of Sacem, La Muse en circuit (Paris) and at the Villa Médicis Hors les murs program. Final mastering was realized at the GMEM (Marseille, France). The recordings were made between 1988 and 1993, in Nunavik (Québec Arctic) in the villages of Puvirnituq, Kuujjuaraapik and Akulivik; in Nunavut (Northwestern Territories), on Coat Island and on Baffin Island in the villages of Iqualuit, Apex and Kimmirut.
