Listen (excerpt)

Composer: Martin Leclerc

Premiere: June 2001, Conservatoire de musique de Montréal (Montréal, Québec)

Either in a muddled phase or not, the mind travels through various states: fear, solitude, joy, sadness… The internal is shaken from everywhere and control is acquainted with absence. The wait is hoping for liberation as long as even the tallest is being filtered by the fog. The rhythm has been broken.

To Nicolas

The biblical scriptures from the Old Testament about the trumpets of Jericho (Book of Joshua, 6) evoke the sonic power of the trumpet and the violence of rivalry in human relationships. Recent political events can shed circumstantial light on this text. These events inspired my choice of materials, but one should not interpret this work as a justification of violence or the expression of political beliefs.

There are other topics arising from the original inspiration, for instance: urban heterogeneity and the media invasion. These topics rub elbows in a dense and sundry counterpoint (lots of materials coming from different fields).

[English translation: François Couture, x-07]

“… since then, he has long tried to forget these abominable memories…” — Enki Bilal, La chose à venir in Memories of Outer Space and Memories of Other Times

L’Odyssée (The Odyssey) draws inspiration from the comic short story La chose à venir by Yugoslavian cartoonist Enki Bilal (1951). The comic book’s world is characterized by science fiction, surrealism, and the psycho-dramatic aspect of both characters and plot. From my analysis of the comic book, I have drawn out a few affects; coldness, anxiety, horror, and madness. For each affect, I have selected a number of sounds that illustrate it on a metaphorical level. However, the book’s plot is used very freely and musically transposed in the form of a program in five tableaux.

[English translation: François Couture, x-07]

L’Odyssée was realized in 2002-03 at the studio of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and was premiered in June 2003 at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. It has won Second Prize at the 2005 Hugh Le Caine Award of the SOCAN Foundation for Young Composers Competition.

Commission: Réseaux des arts médiatiques, with support from the CCA

Premiere: December 10, 2005, Akousma (2), Réseaux, Espace GO (Montréal, Québec)

“Everything was basking in oppressive calm.” — Pablo Neruda (1904-1973), Memoirs (Confieso que he vivido: Memorias) (1974)

“I have never found a companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers.” — Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), Walden; or, Life in the Woods (1854)

This piece is about solitude. I was inspired by my own solitude and two literary works: Walden; or, Life in the Woods by Henry David Thoreau and Confieso que he vivido: Memorias by Pablo Neruda. Sauf dans la brume (Except in the Mist) is a musical transposition of various states of solitude feeding on the literary discourse and soundscape evoked by these works.

[English translation: François Couture, x-07]

Sauf dans la brume was realized in 2005 at the composer’s studio and was premiered on December 10, 2005 during the Akousma (2) festival produced by Réseaux at Espace GO in Montréal. It was commissioned by Réseaux with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. Sauf dans la brume has won First Prize (ex-aequo) at the 2006 Hugh-Le Cain Award of the SOCAN Foundation for Young Composers Competition.

Babies have extremely sensitive ears, particularly refined in the treble and mid-treble range. This allows them to hear the smallest variations in acoustic pressure. The tiniest sound can appear to be gigantic. Lacking a frame of reference, the baby is easily astonished or frightened by sounds more “cultured” ears would find common.

[English translation: François Couture, x-07]

Pièces pour petites oreilles (Pieces for Tiny Ears) was realized in 2003-2004 at the studio of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and at the composer’s studio. It was premiered on April 19, 2004 at the Maison de la culture du Plateau-Mont-Royal in Montréal. Pièces pour petites oreilles has won Third Prize at the 2006 Hugh Le Caine Award of the SOCAN Foundation for Young Composers Competition.

20. Il y a… il y avait des fleurs (2000) 12m00s imed_0786-1.20 | 10127 | ISRC CAD500720960

Listen (excerpt)

Composer: Martin Leclerc

Writer: Martin Leclerc

Premiere: June 2000, Conservatoire de musique de Montréal (Montréal, Québec)

To my mother

Il y a… il y avait des fleurs (There Are… There Were Flowers) is a dramatic programmatic work in which the main character is humankind represented in its modern form (progress, individualism, power, the all-encompassing media chaos), which is often rather close to its primitive state (birth, survival instinct).

The starting point for Il y a… il y avait des fleurs is one of my own texts, Les enrobés (The Blinkered Ones), about loosing control. The sonic mood in the first movement, where this text is fully included, gives a good idea of the general atmosphere of the piece.

Les enrobés (The Blinkered Ones)

The gunshot is heard
The curs kill two thousand dogs
Weapons are high in hand
And tears hang on to ass

At the starting shot, very very early
A walk for hoofed humans
The sect of cloistered screens
For devilish thinkers

Committee meeting: Company
All levels are on the program
The President snorts up a few grams
“First Item: obsessions…”

Have a pleasant evening!

[English translation: François Couture, x-07]
