1. Voix blanche (1988-89) 13m02s imed_0576-1.1 | 14040 | ISRC CAD500518780Commission: Suzanne Binet-Audet, with support from the CCA Premiere: November 18, 1988, Salle Claude-Champagne (Montréal, Québec) ondes Martenot, and tape In memory of Serge Garant (1929-86) This dramatic piece brings together one of the earliest electronic instruments and one of the most recent developments in digital audio technology. The instrumentalist occupies a well-defined space in this universe of sound on tape. However, her role is not that of the traditional soloist. The tones of the ondes Martenot, supple and expressive, approach the strains of the human voice, and seek to meld with the highly intense material on tape. [English translation: François Couture, iii-05] Voix blanche (White Voice) was produced in the composer’s studio. It was premiered on November 18, 1988, at the Salle Claude-Champagne in Montréal as part of a Radio-Canada concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of the ondes Martenot. The piece was commissioned by the performer, Suzanne Binet-Audet, and produced with the assistance of the Canada Council for the Arts. Voix blanche was awarded the 2nd Prize in the mixed electroacoustic category at the 17th Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Competition (France, 1989) and the 2nd Prize at the 11th Luigi Russolo International Competition (Varese, Italy, 1989). Voix blanche first appeared on the Cultures électroniques 4 compact disc produced by the Groupe de musique expérimentale de Bourges (GMEB) and released on the label Le chant du monde (LCD 278049/50), then on the compact disc La mécanique des ruptures, empreintes DIGITALes (IMED 9421). This version was recorded by Gilles Gobeil on December 16-17, 2004, in Boucherville (Québec) and mixed by the composer and the performer in the composer’s studio in January 2005. 2. Là où vont les nuages… (1990-91) 11m18s imed_0576-1.2 | 14218 | ISRC CAD500518790Premiere: June 5, 1991, Université Concordia (Montréal, Québec) ondes Martenot, interactive system, and tape In this piece, the ondes Martenot is linked to a MIDI converter, enabling the performer to play, in addition to her instrument, other MIDI instruments (synthesizer, sampler, and the entirety of the processing). This ’super-instrument’ gives access to a profusion of sounds — simple and complex — which surround and accompany the timbre of the ondes Martenot while remaining responsive to the nuances imparted by the performer. [English Translation: François Couture, iii-05] Là où vont les nuages… (Where the Clouds go…) was produced in the composer’s studio in 1990.
