To my bike-riding friend
Electronic sounds, oral noises, breathing, crowds, lifts, street corners, mechanical objects.
Using outdoor mass events (demonstrations, gatherings, parades, noisy bars) as a starting point, my first intention was to picture the struggle between antibodies and viruses and the auditory point of view of the patient surrounded by machines in a hospital room. Then, as I was in the process of creating this piece, came the story of a friend who was, for an instant, in someone else’s blind spot. This incident penetrated the form and content of Angle mort. Cinema for the ear, microscopic projections.
[English translation: François Couture, i-04]
Angle mort (Blind Spot) was realized in 2001-2002 in the composer’s personal studio in Montréal and premiered on October 30, 2002 as part of the concert Tentacules.03, presented by Codes d’accès in Montréal. Thanks to the Canada Council for the Arts. Angle mort received the public’s prize at the 2nd Biennial Acousmatic Composition Competition Métamorphoses 2002 (Brussels, Belgium) and was recorded in 2002 on the CD Métamorphoses 2002, Musiques & Recherches (MR 2002).

Despite the fact that this piece — qualities, flaws and all — is my first electroacoustic work on digital medium, I wanted to include it here because, in the ideas it develops, it is a prelude to Parcelles.
Instructions: the pieces must be between two and four minutes long. Look for soundscapes bearing the traces of the human activity that will be the only material for a miniature. Include the complete samples selected at least once.
[English translation: François Couture, i-04]
Trois miniatures en suite (Three Miniatures in the form of a suite) was realized in 1997 at the studio of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and premiered on January 29, 1999 as part of the concert Hautes tensions presented by the ACREQ at the Usine C in Montréal. Trois miniatures en suite was awarded the First Prize of the Hugh Le Caine Prize of the SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers (Canada, 1998). The miniature Tonicité was selected as a finalist in the Canadian Electroacoustic Community’s competition Jeu de temps / Times Play (CEC, Canada, 2000) and recorded in 2000 on the CD Cache 2000, CEC (PEP 003).
An association between the passing of an airplane marked by human activity, two Chinese balls rolling on the ground, and a brook.

Superimposition of soundscapes from a single point of view…
“I have always been fascinated by the magical moments found in any sound environment, when
from what appears to be chaos, sounds organize themselves and create a music I am often the
only one to hear.
I wanted to share these incredible moments.
I recorded them.
Then, I asked them to pose for me, just as if I were painting — landscapes, abstract forms,
or by numbers.
The next two pieces illustrate the results.
But they also illustrate: the sound environment of a particular time, the chaos of the world,
the rural calm, the urban swarms, the energy of the living.
They imitate the mechanics of things, the hazards of life, the workings of luck.
Fragments of moments.”

Parcelles 2 (Fragments 2) was realized in 2003 in the composer’s personal studio, in Montréal, and premiered on October 18, 2003 as part of the Rien à voir (14) concert series presented by Réseaux at Espace GO in Montréal. Parcelles 2 was commissioned by Réseaux des arts médiatiques with the help of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
