Robin Minard: Gallery Show, Concert in Montréal

Robin Minard, ex-member of Sonde, is back in Montréal after 20 years of absence! He will present Sons sur papier, a retrospective of several sound installations, at Oboro from April 12 to May 10, 2008. He will also diffuse 3 acousmatic works as part of the Pulsar *3 series on April 14, 2008 at the Planétarium de Montréal. The opening feature of this concert is Nicolas Bernier’s premiere of Les chambres de l’atelier. Note that at this occasion co-artistic directors of Réseaux, Jean-François Denis, Gilles Gobeil, and Robert Normandeau, are “passing the torch” to Nicolas Bernier, versatile and prolific young composer…

Normandeau on Screen and Stage in Montréal

Robert Normandeau has composed the music for the play Blasté by Sarah Kane, directed by Brigitte Haentjens, and starring Céline Bonnier, Roy Dupuis, and Paul Ahmarani. The piece is presented at Usine C in Montréal until April 5, 2008. It is the 12th collaboration between the composer and the director. In addition, we can hear excerpts of La chambre blanche by Robert Normandeau (with text by Marie Uguay) in Gus Van Sant’s latest film, Paranoid Park (now playing in Montréal).

Canadians on DEGEM WebRadio

The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) has hosted a number of Canadian electroacoustic composers over the years such as: Robin Minard, Gordon Monahan, Christian Calon, Francis Dhomont, and Robert Normandeau. The DEGEM and ZKM propose a WebRadio programme which features works composed by these past guest artists as well as by the newest Canadian guest, Gilles Gobeil, in Berlin since January 2008. The Programme B is under section “Berichte/Features.”

The 14th international acousmatic festival “L’espace du son” will take place from October 17 to 21, 2007 at Théâtre Marni in Brussels. The opening night of the festival will celebrate the Musiques & Recherches’ 25th anniversary, premiering 3 musical works: Voix de l’aurore by Ingrid Drese, Murmures by Robert Normandeau, and Chœur des femmes 2, a movement from the opera Yawar Fiesta by Annette Vande Gorne on a libretto by Werner Lambersy. The day after, October 18, will be dedicated to Christian Calon’s music; October 19, to Jean-François Minjard; October 20, to Bernard Parmegiani; and October 21 to Beatriz Ferreyra and Ana Dall’Ara-Majek.

Normandeau in UK and Belgium

Robert Normandeau will take part in the Electroacoustic Music Studies Conference in Leicester (UK), from June 12-15, 2007, to present a lecture entitled “La spatialisation timbrale ou le médium, c’est l’espace.” After that, he will go to the Musiques & Recherches studio in Belgium, from June 16 to July 1st, to compose a new piece celebrating the 20th anniversary of Rumeurs (Place de Ransbeck). This work was composed in 1987, where Robert Normandeau was the first foreign composer invited to Musiques & Recherches. An audio excerpt of Rumeurs (Place de Ransbeck) is available on the CD Lieux inouïs’s page.

Normandeau in Paranoid Park by Van Sant

You can hear excerpts from La chambre blanche by Robert Normandeau — and excerpts of music by Bernard Parmegiani and Frances White — in the new film Paranoid Park by the American filmmaker Gus Van Sant. The film director was awarded the Festival de Cannes’s 60th Anniversary Prize, Stephen Frears announced, “for his career, and because he made a lovely film.” Gus Van Sant had previously won the festival’s top prize in 2003 for his film Elephant (which includes music by Hildegard Westerkamp). Should we conclude that great minds think alike…

trans_canada_release at the ZKM, Karlsruhe

The 2-day event trans_canada_release at the ZKM is a follow-up of the 2005 festival “trans_canada: Tendenzen in Akusmatik und Soundscapes / Trends in Acousmatics and Soundscapes.”

The evening of December 8, 2006 is dedicated to Gilles Gobeil. He will premiere Entre les deux rives du printemps and present Derrière la porte la plus éloignée…, Nuit cendre, and Le contrat (co-composed with René Lussier).

The December 9 concert is a carte blanche to Robert Normandeau who will will premiere Kuppel, spatialize his works Chorus and Venture, as well as Premières traces du Choucas by Francis Dhomont, Topographie de la noirceur by Martin Bédard, and Machin Machine by Delphine Measroch.

CIMESP and Sweden at BIMESP, Brazil

The 6th BIMESP festival — directed by Flô Menezes — took place from June 10 to 17, 2006 at Villa Mariani in São Paulo (Brazil). Some of the concerts presented works from the 4th CIMESP (International Electroacoustic Music Contest of São Paulo) such as Vol d’Arondes by Francis Dhomont, Serendipities and Synchronicities by Pete Stollery, Rojo by Hans Tutschku, Silk to Steel by Mathew Adkins, and Éden by Robert Normandeau. One concert was dedicated to works from Sweden, including the recent Dreaming in Darkness by Åke Parmerud and works by Skog, Johansson, Hedman, Grahn, Sundin, and Liljekvist.

A Normandeau Premiere in Bourges

A new work by Robert Normandeau, Palindrome, will be premiered on June 7, 2006 at the Synthèse festival in Bourges (France). Commissioned by the IMEB, the work was composed in their studios in October 2005 and finished at the Technische Universität (TU) in Berlin in 2006. Palindrome’s 8-channel version will be premiered on the new Cybernéphone (an instrument for the interpretation and spatialization of electroacoustic music in concert settings).

Inventionen 2006, Festival für aktuelle Musik presents concerts, installations and conferences on May 24-28, 2006 in Berlin. On May 25 Jocelyn Robert will present Resident of Unit D at Telas-Kubus (Klosterstraße 68-70, Berlin-Mitte). On May 28, at Villa Elisabeth (Invalidenstraße 3, Berlin-Mitte), Christian Calon, Robert Normandeau, Gilles Gobeil, and Francis Dhomont will respectively present their acousmatic work Time Well / La fontaine du temps, Tangram, Nuit cendre, and Voyage-miroir. During the whole festival, May 24-28, at DAAD Galerie (Zimmerstraße 90/91, Berlin-Mitte), the works StrinGDberg and Éden by Robert Normandeau will be played every half-hour from 11am to 6pm; a conference by this DAAD resident composer is planned for May 24 at 6pm.

Many electrocd.com artists are nominated for the 9th Opus prizes, awarded since 1996 by the Conseil québécois de la musique. The concert Pulsar *1, unveiling the musics from Puzzles by Robert Normandeau, is nominated for “Concert of the year - actuelle and electroacoustic musics”, as well as the Theresa Transistor quartet (Christian Bouchard, Christian Calon, Mario Gauthier, Monique Jean), presented during the Akousma concert series. Estrapade by morceaux_de_machines, Trilogie d’ondes by Gilles Gobeil, and Puzzles by Robert Normandeau are nominated for “Album of the year - actuelle and electroacoustic musics”. Finally, Frank Zappa: 10 ans après (Frank Zappa: Ten Years After) directed by Réjean Beaucage, is nominated for “Book of the year”. Winners will be announced on January 22, 2006.

Normandeau’s Music for Theatre Nominated

Robert Normandeau is twice nominated at the 12th “Soirée des masques” (the annual prizes given by the Association québécoise du théâtre) to be broadcasted on December 18, 2005 on ARTV and Radio-Canada Télévision. The jury selected the music composed for the plays La cloche de verre (The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath) and Médée-matériau (Medea Material, Heiner Müller). The composer was nominated in 2003 for Antigone (Sophocles), and won with Malina (Ingeborg Bachmann) in 2002. All of these plays were directed by Brigitte Haentjens.

The 2005 CIMESP Laureates, Brazil

At the 6th International Electroacoustic Music Contest of São Paulo (CIMESP, Brazil), David Berezan won the First Prize for Styal and Francis Dhomont won an Honorable Mention for Vol d’Arondes. Mathew Adkins and Robert Normandeau also saw their work selected for the finals. Serendipities and Synchronicities by Pete Stollery and Rojo by Hans Tutschku were selected for concert presentation at the 6th BIMESP (International Biennial for Electroacoustic Music of São Paulo) in 2006.

Normandeau in Bourges and Karlsruhe

Starting mid-September, composer Robert Normandeau will stay in Bourges (France) to write a new work comissionned by the IMEB. Following this residency, his most recent work, Palimpseste, will be premiered in Karlsruhe (Germany) on October 21, 2005 at the Theater des Hörens concert at the ZKM. Originally titled ZedKejeM, the work completes the cycle Onomatopées (“Onomatopoeia”), which include the works Éclats de voix (1991), Spleen (1993) and Le renard et la rose (1995). Normandeau will stay in Karlsruhe for two months for studies on real-time music and multiphonic spatialization.

Harrison and Vande Gorne at Nuit bleue 2005

Élektrophonie presents the 2005 Nuit bleue from July 8 to 10, 2005 at Arc et Senans’ Saline Royale (France). Nuit bleue 2005 is the 4th edition of this festival dedicated to new electroacoustic and electronic music, and is presented in coproduction with the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom) and Musiques & Recherches (Belgium). Every acousmatic composition will be spatialized on acousmonium by Sébastien Chatron, Jonty Harrison, Isabel Pires and Annette Vande Gorne. The night will feature compositions by Pete Stollery, Adrian Moore, Denis Smalley, Stephan Dunkelman, Ingrid Drese, Robert Normandeau, Francis Dhomont, Patrick Ascione, Andrew Lewis, Trevor Wishart, Annette Vande Gorne, Elizabeth Anderson, Theodore Lotis, Roger Cochini, Bernard Fort, Jonty Harrison, John Young, David Berezan et Beatriz Ferreyra, amongst others. The concert will then be repeated integrally in Birmingham (UK) on July 16, 2005.

Normandeau and Bédard are Finalists at Métamorphoses d’Orphée

Robert Normandeau is one of the selected finalist for the international acousmatic music competition Métamorphoses d’Orphée. His composition, Hamlet-Machine with Actors was commissioned by Vancouver New Music and premiered on October 11, 2003 during the “Electric City” event. Young Montréal composer Martin Bédard was also selected for his work Check-point. The final will be held October 20, 2004 in Brussels (Belgium).

Barrett and Smalley’s Premieres at Sonorities, Belfast

Composers Natasha Barrett and Denis Smalley will each premiere a new composition for the Sonorities festival of contemporary music, held in Belfast (Northern Irland) from April 23 to May 1, 2004. For the “Monde parallèle Montréal 45°N//” event, organized by Lille - Cultural Capital of Europe, label empreintes DIGITALes presented a portrait of Montréal’s electroacoustic creation since 1971 through 24 works by 21 Montréal composers: Serge Arcuri, Yves Beaupré, Christian Bouchard, Ned Bouhalassa, Christian Calon, Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux, Yves Daoust, Francis Dhomont, Paul Dolden, Louis Dufort, Gilles Gobeil, Monique Jean, René Lussier, Robert Normandeau, Arturo Parra, Mario Rodrigue, Stéphane Roy, Alain Thibault, Jacques Tremblay, Marc Tremblay, Roxanne Turcotte. Electroacoustic label empreintes DIGITALes, new media and electronic art festivals Elektra and Mutek with the collaboration of the Society for arts and technology (SAT) all teamed up to present the best of Montréal’s electronic music and video.

Normandeau in Denmark

Robert Normandeau will give a solo concert for the Danish Institute of Electroacoustic Music (DIEM) festival in Århus (Denmark) November 27, 2003. This concert will be the chance for the composer to present all his latest works in a multichannel format. In addition to Chorus (2002), Le renard et la rose (1995) and StrinGDberg (2001-03), this concert will be an occasion to listen to the new version of Éden (2003) and will see the European creation of Hamlet-Machine with Actors (2003) recently premiered in Vancouver. Apart from this concert, Normandeau will give a lecture and participate in two master class with Natasha Barrett (in concert November 26, 2003) and Wayne Siegel.

Two Normandeau Premieres on the West Coast

Robert Normandeau will travel to Victoria and Vancouverto premiere two new works. Puzzle will be presented at Victoria’s Open Space Arts Society on October 9, 2003. The concert will also feature the compositions Chorus, Le renard et la rose et StrinGDberg. October 11, Vancouver will host the second premiere, Hamlet-Machine with Actors, commissioned by the Vancouver New Music. The Vancouver concert will also feature the compositions Si c’était du jour by Philippe Mion and Vol d’Arondes by Francis Dhomont.

Sound Magicians at Futura 03, Crest, France

Paris’ Glaz’Art will host the Futura festival September 24 and 25, 2003. Under the theme “Sound Magicians,” director of Motus acousmonium, Denis Dufour and three performers will take turns at the console of an impressive system of more than 50 loudspeakers. On September 24, a first concert will feature works by De Filippis, Zanesi, Teruggi, Schaeffer, Reibel, Normandeau, Fort and Ascione. Ivo Malec, Michel Chion and many other composers are also presented the following day. Finally, late-night concerts will be devoted to masters of the medium Luc Ferrari and Bernard Parmegiani.

Normandeau’s Eden

Robert Normandeau is currently working on the stage music for Marguerite Duras’ L’Éden cinéma, directed by Brigitte Haentjens. The play will be presented at Ottawa’s National Center for the Arts on May 13, 2003. It is also scheduled for Montréal’s Festival de théâtre des Amériques (FTA). Normandeau is simultaneously working on the concert version, Éden. The composition was commissioned by the GMEM (Groupe de musique expérimentale de Marseille) and will be premiered on May 12, 2003.

And The Métamorphoses 2002 Laureates Are…

The jury of the biennial competition for acousmatic composition Métamorphoses 2002 has just announced the laureates of this edition. Amongst the awarded composers, Christian Bouchard won the public’s prize for his work Angle mort. Also awarded, Monique Jean for her composition low memory #2 and Robert Normandeau for his more recent work, Chorus. Finally, composers Theodore Lotis and David Berezan were awarded respectively first and second prizes for the Spatialization competition L’espace du son 2002.

Bourges Celebrates 30 Years of Creation

“595 works by 205 composers from 35 different countries were created between 1970 and 2001 in the IMEB studios.” Thus the Institut de musique électroacoustique de Bourges (IMEB, ex-GMEB) finally announces the production of a 2CD box sets gathering 30 years of creation (1970-2000) in its studios at a rate of one work per year. For example, 1989 is represented by Jeu by Robert Normandeau; 1979 by Barry Truax; 1981 by Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux; and 1986 by Yves Daoust.
