On Thursday May 8, 2008 at 7 pm, Louis Dufort will launch his second disc (this one as a 5.1 Surround DVD-Audio) to be released on empreintes DIGITALes: Matériaux composés . The launch will take place at the Café de l’Usine C in Montréal as part of the Elektra festival. The composer will present exerpts and comment them. Frans de Waard of Vital wrote about this release: “[The sounds] all make perfect sense, a fine, balanced audio picture. Sounds do not bounce up and down, back and forth, stumbling and tumbling, but are placed with great care in the right spot.”

The Return of “L’Archange” in Montréal

Chants libres will present L’Archange from April 9 to 12, 2008 at Espace Dell’Arte in Montréal. The creators of this multimedia work first premiered in 2005 are: Pauline Vaillancourt, design and direction; Louis Dufort, music; Alexis Nouss, libretto; and Alain Pelletier, video installation.

Dhomont and Dufort at San Francisco, USA

Two virtuoso of “musique concrète” and acousmatic works — mentor and former student — will be at the “Binary Cities Event: Montréal, Canada - Avignon, France,” a NEXMAP concert. Francis Dhomont’s performance will include Here and There, Phonurgie, and Moirures (a videomusic realized in collaboration with Inés Wickmann). Louis Dufort will premiere the videomusic Flesh that explores the relationship between sonic and visual morphology. He will also diffuse 2 accousmatic works that examine the notion of movement; one of which, Gen_3, is an homage to Francis Dhomont and Pierre Schaeffer. This event will take place at the Recombinant Media Labs in San Francisco (USA) on December 1, 2007 [and December 2, 2007].

Victoriaville matière sonore at FIMAV

Artists A_dontigny, Louis Dufort, Chantal Dumas, Steve Heimbecker, Mathieu Lévesque, Francisco López, Tomas Phillips and Hélène Prévost will get together to form the Victoriaville matière sonore ensemble that will present, under Francisco López’s direction, a collective work of acousmatic art realised using recordings previously realised in the town of Victoriaville. This event will take place on May 19, 2007 as part of the 24th FIMAV.

The Synthèse festival that takes place in Bourges (France) from June 1 to 10, 2007 promises us a great edition. Amongst guest artists, we can find Jon Appleton, Francis Dhomont, Louis Dufort, Denis Dufour, Beatriz Ferreyra, Max Mathews, Barry Truax, and Hans Tutschku. Francis Dhomont will notably present his work Premières traces du Choucas on June 4th and a lecture entitled Hypothèses sur un parcours personnel, the day after, on June 5th.

Gobeil, Thibault Immersed at SAT, Montréal

In the second half of the event, the 2 guest composers will discuss about their esthetic, formal and philosophic concerns; Louis Dufort will be the moderator. This lecture will be followed by a concert given by Gilles Gobeil and Alain Thibault. Both who will share the stage with Joël Beauchamp, Pierre-Marc Beaudoin, and Jean-François Blouin. This audio immersive event wil take place on May 14, 2007 at SAT in Montréal (and it’s free…).

Montréal Sound Matter / Montréal matière sonore, An Installation

Invited by curator Esther Bourdages, seven Canadian artists joined forces with Spanish composer Francisco López for the Montréal Sound Matter / Montréal matière sonore project. Working from a common pool of field recordings from Montréal, Louis Dufort, Steve Heimbecker, A_dontigny, Chantal Dumas, Hélène Prévost, Mathieu Lévesque, and Tomas Phillips created an audio work which will be released as a compilation CD. All together, they have put together a sound installation that will be presented from July 7 to August 27, 2006 at the Darling Foundry (Montréal). To complete the project, a concert featuring all these artists will be held at the Darling Foundry on July 27.

Dufort and Chouinard Get a Mention in Bourges

The winners of the 33rd Bourges International Competition of Electroacoustic Music and Sound Art (France) are announced. Cantique #2, by Louis Dufort and Marie Chouinard, received a mention in the category “Trivium — work for multimedia” while their Cantique #3 was selected in the “Trivium — sound installation” category. Composers James Duhamel, Nicolas Bernier, Natasha Barrett, Pierre Alexandre Tremblay, Ludger Brümmer, and Roxanne Turcotte had their work selected in other categories.

MTM Radio presents over 12 hours of electroacoustics every week including composer Louis Dufort’s program Voile d’Orphée. Musique des temps modernes (Modern Times Music, MTM) is a new Internet subcribe radio [launched on November 6, 2005] dedicated to music from the 20th and 21st centuries. [MTM Radio will close on September 23, 2007 à 6 pm.]

The Orford Arts Centre (Québec) announces its new Sound Creation Workshop as part of the international Music Academy. Held from June 26 to July 8, 2006, this workshop is open to sound creators of all styles. The guests “masters” are John Oswald, Åke Parmerud, Yves Daoust, Alexandre Burton, Louis Dufort, and flutist Robert Aitken.

There will be a public evening concert on July 6 (Piché, Oswald, Parmerud, Dufort), and a half-concert on July 7.

Dufort Premieres Opera L’archange

Louis Dufort is finishing the opera L’archange, on a libretto by Alexis Nouss, with visual work by Alain Pelletier, and staged by Pauline Vaillancourt. The opera is produced by Chants libres and will be presented at Sation C (Montréal) on April 28, 29, 30 as well as on May 5, 6, 7, 2005. It will also be presented during the Elektra festival on May 12, 13, 14, 2005. With Jean Maheu, Fides Krucker, Émilie Laforest, and Frédéricka Petit-Homme.

New Music for Dance by Dufort and Tobin

This fall, the audio works of Louis Dufort and Nancy Tobin will be featured in two choreographies presented at Agora de la danse (Montréal). Louis Dufort composed the music for Dans le silence des bambous (In the silence of the bamboos) by choreographer Jocelyne Montpetit, presented from October 27 to 30, 2004. As for Nancy Tobin, she created the sound design for Duos pour corps et instruments (Duos for bodies and instruments) by choreographer Danièle Desnoyers, on stage from November 16 to 20, 2004.

Dufort Premieres his Harbour Symphony

Louis Dufort is the guest composer for this year’s “Symphonie portuaire” (Harbour Symphony), held near Pointe-à-Callière (Montréal), Sunday March 3, 2002 at 2pm. Intonarumori, for tape, boat horns, church bells and live audio processing on a specially designed software, will also be transmitted live on Radio-Canada’s Chaîne culturelle.
